A brown ring on the ceiling, a sagging patch of drywall, or an active drip is one of the clearest signs that water is getting into your home from above. Ceiling water damage is also one of the riskier kinds, because a saturated ceiling can collapse. Here's what causes it and what to do.
Common Causes
Water above a ceiling usually comes from one of these.
- Roof leaks from damaged shingles, flashing, or storm damage.
- Plumbing leaks from pipes or fixtures on the floor above.
- Overflowing tubs, toilets, or showers upstairs.
- HVAC condensation or a clogged condensate line in the attic.
- Ice dams forcing snowmelt under the roof in winter.
What to Do Right Away
Act quickly and stay safe.
- Keep people away from a sagging or bulging ceiling — it can collapse.
- Place a bucket and, if safe, relieve a water 'bubble' by puncturing a small drain hole at its lowest point to control the release.
- Move furniture and valuables out from under the area.
- Find and stop the source if you can (shut off water to an upstairs fixture).
Why You Shouldn't Just Paint Over It
Painting a stain without fixing the source and drying the cavity leaves moisture trapped above — leading to mold, recurring stains, and structural damage. The leak must be found, the area dried, and the ceiling properly repaired.
